    Pm Skills Assessment

I am looking for ideas on how to assess Project Manager skills within our PMO. The hope is that we can use the results to identify areas of focus for the overall PMO as well as to help develop individual training plans. Anyone have any ideas or approaches they can share? Thanks!

    Suzanne,

Suzanne - We are working through a competency assessment with our PMs as well.  We are using the PMI Project management competency assessment as a starting point and then addding specfic evidence based reviews.  I'll attach our assessment tool.

Barb - Thanks for sharing this. How did the PMs respond to this? I just started with my current company but apparently they did a subjective assessment 2 years ago that was very similar to what you have.  I guess they didn't find much value in completing this, but also had issues with PMs over-rating themselves.

    Re: Pm Skills Assessment

Suzanne - It takes some effort on the PMs part to adequately assess their skills.  I heard comments that it was hard, but comprehensive.  After the PM rates themselves, the resource management rates the PM and then I rate the PM.  Of the ones I've completed, the PMs have rated themselves fairly accurately.  The intent is to identify development opportunities for the PMs and a baseline for the organization.   We are new to this, so we'll see how it plays out.
