Suggestions for books on Project and Programme management

As a part of my career move, I am now taking over as programme manager for a portfolio of IT projects in a CLINICAL DATA environment. I would also be responsible as a project manager of an IT project.

To gear up for this challenge, I request you to share your wisdom in picking the right books/online membership or content. I am looking for practical solutions rather than looking to pass any exam. BTW, I am NOT PMI/PMP certified.

With respect to managing (programme management, portfolio management, PMO office setup and Project management) of IT projects in a clinical environment, kindly suggest...
    1. Books and authors
    2. Online membership websites
    3. Free resources if any

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks in advance
    Mani

    Mani,

I just made two posts in this forum.  The posts were in the forum previously and I am trying to find out where they went.  I have given you good books and website with some comments where necessary.  These are my opinions and I am sure others will add to the list.

Essentials of Strategic Project Management (Callahan / Brooks)

While not really written for the PM level of project mgmt, it would be a great tool to help shape the formation of a PMO or enterprise-wide mgmt office.

If you want some straight forward, practical and real-world info that does not try to force-feed any specific methodology I can highly recommend

'No-Nonsense Advice for Successful Projects' by Neal Whitten.

I've also attended Neal's 2 day seminar on the same topic and it's great, but even the book alone will give you plenty of food for thought.  It is exceptionally well written and has a great Q-A section at the end of each short chapter.  (He recently released a follow-up which is on my list to read ASAP)

For advice on PMO setup you might wanty to look at "The Complete Project Management Office Handbook" - although at over 700 pages it may be a bit tough to digest up front (but I'll leave that up to you).
