    Viewing 2 Gantt charts simultaneously

    Hi,

Does anyone know a way to view 2 Gantt Charts simultaneously? This is currently prevented as when you attempt to open up the 2nd gantt chart it opens over the top of the 1st one (i.e. in the same IE window).

There are other examples e.g. opening 2 windows of the admin page; however not being able to view 2 gantt charts is the most frustrating and you can't work around it by using firefox and IE as the gantt is not compatible with Firefox

    Thanks

Currently, the application will reuse an existing popup to avoid accumulating a large number of open popups with a variety of information.  I know it can be a little frustrating when trying to multi-task in the application, but having previously worked with an application that did allow multiple popups, it is preferable to minimize the number of open browser windows.  I once saw a user with so many open browser windows, each in an Edit mode, that the machine crashed (the user lost all of their unsaved data, probably 40-50 records).

Either way, this doesn't address what you are trying to accomplish in Daptiv - there may be alternative ways to help you get what you're after.  In this instance, are you just looking to compare schedules or modify them in tandem?  Or, are you trying to adjust one schedule based on the current state of another?

     Thanks for your response.

Project managers at my company tend to manage around 4 or 5 projects at a time so when flicking between projects it would be useful not to lose your place in other project work. For example if youre busy editing 1 gantt chart and a team member comes to ask a question regarding another project we would expect to be able to quickly open up the other project without losing our editting work on the 1st gantt chart. Mainly though we would expect to be able to view rather than edit multiple gantt charts at once.

You won't lose any work in the Gantt chart since changes are real-time, so if you have to navigate away from the currently open chart to review another, the changes you are making/have recently made are retained, so you won't have to worry about that.

Regarding the flipping back and forth between schedules, may I suggest the following as a way to hopefully streamline the process:

    • First, make sure the Shorcuts dashboard pane is added to your dashboard.
    • Set a shortcut to the a Tasks view in each project you're currently managing.  I'd recomend the Outline View since you can't shortcut to the Gantt chart.
    • This allows you to be working in one Gantt chart and then when you need to review another schedule, simply jump to your dashboard, select the desired Project shortcut, then open the Gantt chart from there.  It will reuse the Gantt window you're currently in, but your work will not be lost.  When you're done reviewing the new schedule, you can jump back to the one you were working on in the same way.
    • If you didn't make any changes to the new schedule, you can probably use the browser Back function to return to the previous Gantt chart (use Alt-Back Arrow or right-click->Back since the browser controls are hidden in Gantt view).
    • When a project is no longer active, remove the dashboard shortcut and add the new project(s) when then come online.

This still only allows you to view one Gantt at a time, but will hopefully make it a lot easier and less time-consuming to flip between schedules.

Give that a shot and let us know how it goes for you!
